History of North-West University

North-West University as we know it today was created in 2004, as part of the South African government’s plan to transform higher education, interestingly however it’s origins date further back, as the current institution was born from the merger of three previous universities,  the former University of North-West, the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, and the Sebokeng Campus of Vista.

For the country, the creation of North-West University represents a strong symbolic act of reconciliation and nation building, which is present at the forefront of their values and mission.

With more than 7 faculties North West University has a strong range of programs across  Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Natural & Agricultural Sciences and Theology.

Admission requirements

To apply to North West University you first need a student number, which can be obtained from it’s website, complete all the fields on the form of your desired program, you’ll also need to upload your grade 12 marks, or a matric certificate, however even with a complete application some programs will ask you to present a selection test, which can be booked via website or phone.

Student Life

North West University counts with a wide arrange of clubs and events geared towards the enjoyment of school life, ranging from sports clubs with a trajectory on world championships, or their own student organized events like GeeXpo, which appeal to a broad selection of interests.

To bolster this strong sense of belonging North West University counts with it’s own radio station, River FM 87.6, which discusses all matter of themes of interest for the student body and the general area.

North-West University counts with an abundance of residences for it’s students, some of these are even located in a nature reserve, giving it an identity unique from the usual college residents, which helps building friendships in an environment close yet removed from the day to day school life.

Part-time work

While North West University doesn’t have a strong statement on part-time work, the institution does count with their own NWU e-recruitment portal, which can help students to occasionally find employment in the premises of the institution.

As with most universities, North West University counts with it’s own bursary and loan programs to further help it’s student body.
